In the events of Easter, God took a risk. That idea might surprise you: “God taking a risk!?” To us, an all-powerful God is the one least susceptible to risks. But the stories of Easter hold up many risk-takers: God, Jesus, the three visiting the tomb… and even ourselves. 

We know the people in the stories of Good Friday: the Pharisees, Peter, Mary (sister of Lazarus), Pilate, Jesus’ mother Mary. Through five dramatic readings we will hear from these people and their feelings about the day’s events. Let their reflections touch our hearts and move us to a deeper sense of wonder, belief and gratitude for what Jesus did for us on that day. 

Jesus loved using Peter the disciple as an example. In tonight’s readings, we hear again how Jesus washed Peter’s feet to teach him, and the other disciples, that loving most fully comes from serving others. A simple basin and a towel serve as reminders of Jesus teaching us to love others. Rev. Dr. Derek Weber memorably describes this service as a gateway to grace, writing, “From Palm Sunday through Easter, the world is remade, a new creation, and we are blessed to be a part of it, blessed to receive a gift beyond words, which is nothing less than eternity itself.”
