Debby Dorcas

I was born and raised in New Brunswick, but Calgary and St. Andrew’s have been my home for many years now.  I am currently serving on Session, the Worship Team, the Christian Education Team, and love working on Intergenerational musicals with ‘every age and stage’ of people who love music.

I have been part of the office staff since May 2018 as Executive Assistant.  If you need time with any of our ministers, need to book a room in our busy Church, or find out about any of our activities or teams, please reach out.

Who inspirited your faith journey and why?

There are so many people who have inspired me, but along with my parents, my grandmother was someone who taught me the importance of ‘living your faith’. Two vivid memories I have as examples of this are:  sitting in her kitchen as a very young child, as she taught me how to tie my sneakers and sing the doxology at the same time.  I’ve often reflected that what she REALLY taught me by linking these two things together is that as you walk through life, Praise God… your blessings are from God.  The second memory is of a time we were really struggling in our small church, and I asked her why we had to go to church when it was so hard to be there.  She replied, “This is our church home.  You don’t give up  on your church.”  I have often heard her whisper ‘Don’t give up’ whenever I’ve been going through personal troubles of any kind.

What are 3 things that really annoy you?

The alarm on my iPhone every morning;  slow computers;  and  how hard it is to peel an avocado!

What “lesson from mom” do you still live by today?

The first day of summer vacation the year I was nine, I ‘whined’ the following words to my mom: “I’m bored.  I don’t have anything to do.”    She took my hand, we went upstairs to the dresser in my room, and Mom opened and dumped out the contents of every drawer onto the floor, looked at me and said, “Now you have something to do.”   Lesson learned:  unless you want to spend your time doing things you really don’t WANT to do, find things that you are passionate about and get at it!!
